Couples

+ Family Therapy

I work with couples and families who are looking to improve their relationships and connections. I believe that communication is the cornerstone of any successful relationship. My goal is to help my client address their needs- all but not limited to: trust issues, boundary issues, infidelity, intimacy issues, addiction, financial difficulties, cultural differences and parental disagreements. Whether your goal is to build your relationship or to find a healthier way to part, we can work together to find the right steps.

Couples therapy can be equally as beneficial for a smooth sailing relationship as it can be for a relationship that is on the rocks. With couples therapy, I want each client to feel heard and supported by individually identifying their needs and wants in their relationship. Furthermore, I assist couples in a variety of ways by improving communication skills, to build trust and intimacy, creating healthy boundaries, as well as creating tools to help better manage conflict more efficiently and work through any unresolved issues within the relationship.

Family therapy sessions are focused on building the relationships and functioning of the members of a family unit. We will work through struggles, challenges, and tough times in a way that doesn’t simply have the problem go away, but makes the family stronger. Almost all families enter into therapy because something unpleasant is going on—the illness of a child, addictions, behavioral problems, or relational problems. These stressors take a toll on everyone. Family therapy is a means to help cope with these life stressors, which is different than making them go away.

Children

+ Adolescents

Being a child or a teenager is rough. Between trying to do well in school, getting along with their peers, potential cyber bullying, changing schools, growing pains and hormones, parent divorce, and the stress they may experience from home, children and teens go through a lot. A lot of which they are unwilling or unable to share with others, which can result in depression, anger issues, poor self-esteem, anxiety or phobias.

Therapy can be an intimidating process for a child or teen, but I want it to feel the opposite of that. Younger children may require a more action-oriented therapy due to limited expressive skills. I utilize play-therapy to make them feel comfortable discussing potentially tough topics. Not only do I help children and teens learn ways to communicate and regulate their feelings, but also how to resolve problems as well. Adolescents, hesitant to express feelings/emotions with family and friends, may find sharing more comfortable with a therapist. Whatever the concern is that brings the child/adolescent into a therapeutic situation, they are treated as an individual and have treatment planned accordingly. In addition, the therapist may consult with a parent(s) with regard to an issue related to their child.

EMDR Therapy

Do you feel extra stuck in negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself? Can't seem to really get past your past as much as you try? Maybe it's a bad feeling you can't shake, or a bad memory that you can't get out of your head. EMDR taps into your brain's natural ability to heal, to help bring faster relief so you can finally feel better.

What does EMDR stand for?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a special type of therapy that is focused on breaking down negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself, that stem from traumatic or disturbing events. Do any of these sound familiar?

I'm not good enough, I can't trust myself (or anyone), I'm not worthy, I am different, don't belong, I have to be perfect, I'm ugly

When we go through a traumatic or disturbing experience, our brain often stores the memory of the stressful incident, in an unhelpful way, that impacts us in our everyday life. Our brain stores images, body sensations, emotions, and thoughts about ourselves. Often times we don’t even realize it, but we can see the effects in our stress responses, self esteem, fear, anxiety, depression, etc.

What happens during an EMDR session?

By using EMDR, I help you reprocess the negative memories and thinking, by taking the emotional charge out of the experience of a specific memory. The newly processed memories then impact you less negatively, feeling a new sense of overcoming how the incident once deeply affected you. The meaning of a once painful event, is transformed into a different, more helpful perspective. EMDR is pretty different than traditional talk therapy, because there involves a specific protocol and type of questions I’ll ask. You also won’t have to tell me all the details, if you don’t want to. It also involves using special tools to get the different parts of your brain activated. Because EMDR works directly with your brain functions, it has been found to be very effective with healing and relief for many.
